The roots of Waltons Chapel Church run deep in the history of our Community of Henrietta. Religion was at the heart of the community and shared by all. As early settlers moved westward, their religion came with them, and the growth of Methodism followed. Soon Methodist circuit riders appeared in this area. Because of the hardships of the wilderness, individual churches were non-existent; therefore, many worship services were held in campgrounds for large meetings. Many denominations worshipped together, and from these sites permanent churches were established.
The first of these churches in this area was located in the hollow near where Preston Bagwell now resides. In 1820, Fendall Whitworth, a large landholder in the area, donated an acre of land for the building of Whitworth's Chapel.
Flooding in the hollow from the Cumberland River made regular services difficult so the church was moved to higher ground. In 1849 the logs were moved up the hill on land donated by Johah Majors. This church was renamed Major's Chapel and stood to the east of where it stands today.
The church was moved again and enlarged in 1866. The old logs were re-used and new logs were hewn to complete the new church. The church was renamed to Walton's Chapel to honor Dr. Isaac B. Walton, a pastor as well as a country doctor during the Civil War.
Many changes have taken place to the original log structure. By the 1920's, the outside logs and the inside ceiling were covered with planks. Electricity, a higher ceiling and a new floor were improvements made in the 1940's. Four Sunday School rooms were built and gas heat was added in 1952; more rooms on the other side were built in 1956.
New windows, new pews, a chancel rail and a choir loft were added in 1958. In 1974, a parsonage was built on the lot next door on land donated by Linus Gupton. The house was built by Howard King and co-owned with Brewers Chapel. By 1977, the front had been extended and bathrooms were added. A fellowship hall was completed in 1989 and the sanctuary was remodeled in 1990.
In December 1997, a steeple was erected in memory of Ricky Hollis, a devoted Christian and church member. Discussion of extending the fellowship hall led to the need for more land. In 1998, the Stanley Frazier family bought and deeded 1.875 acres to the church to meet that need.
In 1993 and 2003 new pew cushions were placed and new choir robes were purchased in memory of those who donated their time and service. The cross above the pulpit was hung in memory of Guy Hollis. The fellowship hall was expanded in 2001 and the kitchen was remodeled. New flags adorned the Fellowship Hall in memory of Ted Blessing by his wife Evelyn. The Buford and Wallace Gupton family and the Jarrell family gave a new communion cabinet, service set and baptismal cup. In 2004, an acre of land was bought to upgrade the ballfield and dedicated in honor of E.J. Hollis on Easter Sunday 2005.
In 2017 the church members made the decision to move forward with planning and design of a Recreation facility. Fundraisers began, and in the summer of 2018 groundbreaking ceremony was held. The steel building was erected in 2019-2020, and the interior is being completed as time and funds permit. In 2021, the church members decided to upgrade the current sound and video systems. In early 2022, the worship experience changed dramatically, as a completely automatic sound system controlled the entire set of microphones. A broadcast quality camera was installed to allow for seamlessly transmitting our services over the internet. Video monitors were installed to improve the sanctuary experience for those attending.
In May of 2022, the congregation decided that since our values did not align with those of the United Methodist Conference, we would request our separation from the conference. During a special called Church Conference, led by the District Superintendent, the membership, in a majority vote, officially requested our independence. After acceptance and approval of the request, the Conference presented the Church with deeds to all property previously held by the Conference. In July 2022, Waltons Chapel Church was formed.
Waltons Chapel stands as proud today, as it has since its beginnings in the 1800's. Many people have made contributions with their labor of love, time and offerings to make Waltons Chapel what it is today. Though the walls have changed, the love and dedication to God's service remain strong at Waltons Chapel Church.
Our Mission is to provide a welcoming and comfortable experience for visitors and our congregation, as we praise our creator and lead folks to a greater understanding of our Lord and Savior.
Our goal is to spread God's word, to as many as we possibly can.
Together, we can make a difference.
